Senegal’s under-20 men’s soccer team defeated Gambia 1-0 on Sunday to win the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Zone A title in Nouakchott.
The tournament took place in the Mauritanian capital at the Cheikha Ould Boidiya stadium in front of a large crowd, with Samba Diallo scoring the only goal of the match.
The two teams could not be separated in the interval as the Senegalese reacted intelligently to the Gambian’s first attempts to break the deadlock.
The Baby Cubs managed to score thanks to Diallo, who was named best player of the tournament by the regional body.
A pass from Pape Amadou Diallo in the 63rd minute responded with a powerful header from Samba Diallo to deliver the trophy to his team.

Despite the Gambians’ belated attempts to win the game and numerous substitutions, the Senegalese defenders remained determined to win the title.
The two finalists will represent WAFU Zone A in the final round of the Total Energies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations 2023, scheduled in Egypt. “We deserved the victory with a goal scored after losing several scoring chances. I also congratulate Gambia, a very good team and it is good that the area has such a competitive tournament. I also greet the Senegalese Football Federation, which promotes continuity by making us move from Under 17 to Under 20. A lot of new African champions last year in the U17 team.”
