The first South-South Chess tournament opened in Uyo with over one hundred Chess players within and outside the country participating.

The event under the Nigeria Chess federation’s auspices is held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium from today to Tuesday, July 5.

According to the Competition Director, who is also the South South representative on the board of the Nigeria Chess Federation, Augustine Apemiye said, the championship is to improve the game across the six geo-political zones in the country.

At the exhibition match today, the World grand master of Chess from Egypt, Hesham Abdelrahman advised young Chess players to show more interest in the game as it will expose them to the International level.

The tournament is taking place in all the geopolitical zone of the country for the development of Sports and discovering young talent.

As part of activities at the tournament, coaches will be trained.

The event’s second edition is expected to be held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
