The party’s position was communicated in a release signed by Mr Borono Bassey, the State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, which rose from the State Exco Meeting on Thursday April 15, and said the decision was based largely on stakeholder feedback during the recently concluded PDP Federal Constituency Sensitization Tour in the State.

On the zoning of the Governorship seat in Akwa Ibom State, the party, which has depended on the existing zoning structure since 1999, has proclaimed that it is now the turn of the Uyo Senatorial District to produce the next Governor, as agreed by Akwa stakeholders over the years.

“Exco noticed with deep joy and appreciation that members of our party have accepted that it is the turn of the Uyo Senatorial District to produce a Governor in a historic display of respect for the existing structure on zoning and rotation for the office of Governor.”

“This regard is aptly illustrated by members of our party from the other two Senatorial Districts’ choice not to make any move in signaling their interest in running for Governor in the 2023 elections,” according to the statement.

The party, which affirmed previously communicated positions by stakeholders following a state wide engagement, stated that the PDP Senatorial seat for Eket Senatorial District is zoned to Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency, for Uyo is zoned to Uyo Federal Constituency, and for Ikot Ekpene is ceded to Abak Federal Constituency.

In the runup to the primaries and general elections, the party’s state leadership urged party faithful in Akwa Ibom to maintain “the current tempo unity prevailing in the party,” thanking stakeholders and members for their “unending demonstration of faith and unwavering support,” and assuring faithful and the state of the party’s continued resolve to serve as a platform for the “emergence of credible leaders” who will take the state to greater heights.
