President Muhammadu Buhari says he has directed the Ministry of Defense to establish a modest military-industrial complex for the local production of weapons to meet some of the country’s armed forces’ requirements.
He explained that the industrial complex would address Nigeria’s over-reliance on other countries for military equipment and logistics.
He stated that the project is being carried out by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), a military department in charge of arms manufacturing.
In addition to other efforts to strengthen national security, the President announced that Nigeria had received six A-29 Super Tucano aircraft.
He stated that the military uses propeller-driven aircraft for training, surveillance, and attack.
“President Buhari said as part of the efforts towards strengthening the national security, investments in arms, weapons and other necessary equipment; expanded the National Command and Control Centre to nineteen states of the Federation; and established a Nigerian Police Trust Fund, which will significantly improve funding for the Nigeria Police Force have been put in place.
