Needless to make any fuss about it. In fulfilling the promise, there seems to be an air of relief. Not a few people – particularly among the political class, party faithful, and supporters alike – despaired about the ‘dangerous delay’ by the governor to make a pronouncement as regards who he believes would better serve the interest of the state in 2023.

And, expectedly, when it finally came early in the week, it kept tongues wagging. Existentialist philosopher, Criss Jami had noted that “It is not about going around trying to stir up trouble. As long as you’re honest and you articulate what you believe to be true, somebody somewhere will become your enemy whether you like it or not”.

For some time now, the governor has been romanticizing about the prospect of sustaining the legacies and benefits of his administration achieved through the instrumentality of peace, and some notable personalities in love with the governor’s impressive performance including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, at the commissioning of Ikot Oku Ikono flyover, has been harping on the imperatives of Governor Emmanuel to anoint his successor.

Even the most virulent critics of Governor Emmanuel and his administration will admit that he has touched on every aspect of his campaign promise to the people and, in particular, acquitted himself on industrializing the state.

Apart from the visible infrastructure like roads and bridges, flyover, erosion control projects, the Ibom Air that provides immediate benefits and reliefs, the big picture intended to define the economic frontiers of Akwa Ibom – the Deep seaport and the science and technology park – could be doomed if not entrusted into patriotic hands imbued with capacity, vision, and courage.

And the mantle fell on Pastor Umo Eno who is currently serving as Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources in Akwa Ibom State

The unveiling, last Sunday, has put paid to all speculations, permutations, and controversies which surrounded the governor’s succession plan. More importantly, it also crippled the unwarranted prophecies that tended to blind his decision.

Believe it or not, the governor must have thought through it carefully and is convinced that whatever legacies he would leave behind will not only be sustained but given accelerated progress in the interest of the state.

Since it is widely acknowledged that it is within the rights of the governor to present his preferred candidate, his right should first be respected before anything else. Secondly, we must remember that his choice is restricted, as it were, to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where he, as party politics in Nigeria believes, is the leader.

Similarly, the governor may also have been worried about the bad precedence in the past where significant projects that would have added value to the state and her people, were unjustifiably distorted or outrightly abandoned. I did mention them in another piece earlier – and this is already well known by the people.

However, because people have different perspectives on issues, it is expected that they employ conventions of polite behavior to express their own feelings. It is uncongenial for anyone to castigate the personality of Pastor Umo Eno simply because you don’t like his face or colour of skin.

In democracies, the world over, every candidate for an election passes through the rigors of selection within a political party and would have fulfilled the requirements and expectations of his party before being nominated. In the light of this, Pastor Umo Eno should be judged by the contents he possesses in terms of qualifications, capacity, competence, and intellectual strength to solve the myriads of problems bedeviling the state.

Umo Eno is familiar with the Akwa Ibom environment and understands the basic challenges of the people and the methods to handle them. He has his own blueprint and will unveil same at the appropriate time.

Pastor Umo Eno is coming with a wealth of experience as a successful businessman, seasoned administrator and entrepreneur, and a man of proven integrity.

What is required of a leader is basically in the ideas and practical solutions he brings to bear which ultimately defines the living standard of his people. Thus, it seems rather too early to ventilate ill feelings without even giving an opportunity for the test. But sometimes you never really know the person you are resenting most likely turns out the Messiah we had so much desired.

All that is required now is to lend our support to the governor to preserve his legacies and provide everyone the opportunity to relish continued peace. This can be possible through the Umo Eno
