Former Governor Udom Emmanuel’s rumored plans to contest the Akwa Ibom South Senatorial seat in 2027 signal a potentially heated political showdown between two prominent figures in the state: Emmanuel and the current senator, Ekong Sampson.
This development has stirred conversations within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and across the political landscape of Akwa Ibom State.
2027 Senate: Group Warns Against Dangerous Political Schism
Udom Emmanuel, who left office in 2023 after completing two terms as governor, and with alleged controversial financial spending, is widely recognized for his contributions to Akwa Ibom’s development.
His administered focus on infrastructure, industrialization, and human capital development people say were nothing to write home about.
Even with this, Emmanuel is likely to position himself as a candidate drawing strength from the present administration.
On the other hand, Senator Ekong Sampson has worked to solidify his standing in the senatorial district since taking office.
He has focused on constituency development projects, legislative contributions, and grassroots engagements, earning him significant support.
However, facing a political heavyweight like Emmanuel could challenge his re-election bid.
The speculated senatorial bid by Udom Emmanuel highlights several key aspects of Nigerian politics:
- Former Governors Transitioning to the Senate: Across Nigeria, it has become a common trend for former governors to seek senatorial positions after completing their gubernatorial terms. The Senate offers a platform for continued influence in national politics and an opportunity to push regional development agendas.
- Intra-Party Politics: Within the PDP, this contest could create divisions, as both figures are influential within the party. Ensuring a unified front after the primaries will be crucial for the party’s success in the general election.
- Grassroots Mobilization: Both Emmanuel and Sampson will need to court voters at the grassroots level, addressing their specific concerns and needs. Emmanuel’s experience as governor might give him an edge, but Sampson’s direct engagement as a senator will also play a critical role.
- Campaign Strategy: The battle will likely hinge on campaign narratives, with Emmanuel focusing on his legacy and capacity for broader impact and Sampson emphasizing continuity and deep constituency connections.

If Udom Emmanuel formally declares his candidacy, the race will likely draw significant national attention, given the profiles of the contenders and the potential implications for PDP politics in Akwa Ibom and beyond.
As the 2027 elections approach, both Emmanuel and Sampson will need to rally their supporters, solidify their strategies, and engage with the electorate to win the highly coveted seat.
Howbeit, the Coastal Community Youth Forum, Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency reflects a strong argument in favor of maintaining the established rotational and zoning arrangement for elective positions in the Eket Senatorial District, specifically regarding representation in the Senate.
It highlights the historical precedence of equitable representation among the three federal constituencies—Ikot Abasi, Eket, and Oron since 1999.
This arrangement has ensured that each constituency serves two consecutive terms, promoting equity and fairness across the district.
The argument emphasizes that Distinguished Senator Ekong Sampson of Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency is currently serving his first term in the Senate, following the sequence that began anew in 2023.
Therefore, it posits that any attempt to disrupt this sequence and deny Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency a second term from 2027 to 2031 would violate the principles of justice, equity, and fair play that have guided the district’s political arrangements for over two decades.
The group also uses the metaphor “What is good for the goose is good for the gander” to underscore the importance of consistency in applying the zoning formula.
It implies that the same principles that allowed Eket and Oron Federal Constituencies to serve their full two terms should apply to Ikot Abasi.
Furthermore, it quotes a noted statesman, reinforcing the notion that every constituency has the right to demand and receive fair treatment.
This plea for fairness is likely aimed at preempting potential political maneuvers that might disrupt the arrangement, ensuring that Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency completes its rightful tenure.
The argument aligns with the broader principles of power-sharing and inclusivity, which are critical for sustaining unity and trust within a diverse polity.
