With arrangements insight, All Progressives Congress Governors after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari said that the much-anticipated national convention of the Party in Nigeria will be held in February 2022.
This was revealed by Mala Buni, the Governor of Yobe State and Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee, following a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in Abuja.
Governors Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi and Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa also attended the meeting.
Mr. Bagudu serves as the chairman of the APC governors’ forum, also known as the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF).
In an interview with State House journalists following the meeting, Mr. Buni stated that the approved month was suggested by the forum in a meeting held on Sunday.
He also stated that the party has not set a specific date for the event, but will do so after extensive consultation with other stakeholders.
Mr Buni, whose elongated tenure on the seat has drawn criticism from members, dismissed the possibility of another extension.
“Am I a jobless person who is always looking for ways to extend his tenure; to do what?”
As governor, my primary responsibility is to return to my state and carry out my primary responsibility.

“What I’m here to do is ad hoc and, of course, to reposition the party, which is exactly what we’ve been able to do,” he explained.
Following the controversial dissolution of Adams Oshiomhole’s National Working Committee, the Yobe State Governor was appointed in June 2020 to lead a 13-member National Caretaker Committee (NWC).
He was tasked with bringing the fractured party together and delivering an acceptable national convention in six months, which he failed to do.
Mr. Buni’s tenure was extended from December 2020 to June 2021, amid other emerging leadership squabbles within the party.
However, in his comment, Mr. Bagudu, Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), explained that the governors’ decision was informed by the need to complete outstanding congresses in four states.
“One of the inputs we received yesterday was that we still have four states in the process of completing their congresses, including Anambra, which is understandable given the recent gubernatorial election, Zamfara, and two others due to logistical challenges.”
