Burna Boy has been presented with a trophy for the third year in a row after he was named winner at the 2021 BET Awards on Sunday, June 27, 2021, at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles
The 29-year old beat out fellow Nigerian musician Wizkid, Tanzanian Diamond Platnumz, and other artists to take home the trophy.
After missing the opportunity in 2019, he was there at the ceremony and accepted the prize himself.
He stated, “This time I made it to receive my prize personally,” before teaching the crowd a bit of Pidgin
English.”I’d want to educate you, people, a little bit about where you’re all from,” he remarked, his mother standing
by him, before encouraging them to speak a Pidgin English word.
He added in a video on BET’s social media page, “Three-peat, that’s my third one, back to back.”
Burna Boy continues to reign supreme in this area after a successful year in which he released three critically acclaimed albums in a row. Before his win in 2019, he released the single ‘Outside.’ With the release of ‘African Giant’ in 2019, he was able to maintain his grip on the award in 2020. Twice as Tall, his most recent album, was published in 2020.
During this incredible run, the Port Harcourt native also won a Grammy and was nominated for another.
