At a time when Nigeria is facing severe economic challenges, a depreciating currency, record levels of youth unemployment, and insecurity across regions, and a healthcare system in need of urgent attention, the last thing Nigerians need is a full-blown political soap opera (Akpabio–Natasha) playing out in the National Assembly.
Yet, that’s exactly what the Akpabio–Natasha saga has become—an unnecessary and exhausting distraction from the real issues.
End the Akpabio–Natasha Saga Now
Let’s be honest: no matter who is “right” or “wrong” in this matter, the prolonged public squabble between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is an insult to the intelligence and sensibilities of Nigerians.
It has shifted attention away from what really matters—lawmaking, governance, and national development—and turned the Senate into a battleground of personalities.
For a Senate President who once held sway as a two-time governor and minister, Akpabio is expected to display maturity, tact, and vision.
His words carry weight, and his actions set the tone for the upper chamber. When leadership becomes defensive, combative, and thin-skinned, the entire institution suffers.
On the other hand, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, as a vocal and courageous member of the Senate, has every right to demand transparency, challenge the status quo, and seek clarity on matters of national concern. But there’s a line between accountability and political provocation—and it is a line that must not be crossed under the guise of activism or public interest.
What message does this endless back-and-forth send to millions of Nigerians who are barely surviving? What do we tell young people looking up to our lawmakers for inspiration? That governance is just another reality show? That the Senate is now a stage for public feuds and personal vendettas?
The legislative chamber must not lose its dignity. It is the heartbeat of democracy—a place where laws are made, policies debated, and the future of a nation shaped. If lawmakers reduce it to a gossip mill, then what separates them from roadside brawlers?
While this saga dominates the news cycle, critical bills are gathering dust. Public hearings are postponed, and policy discussions are pushed aside.

Where are the urgent conversations about inflation? The worsening state of education? The fuel subsidy confusion? The minimum wage debate? Healthcare reform? Insecurity? Power sector collapse?
Instead, what we get is name-calling, press conferences, and grandstanding—all at taxpayers’ expense.
It is high time the Senate leadership took decisive action. The ethics committee must step in. Resolutions must be passed to return focus to legislative work. And both Senators must be reminded that they were elected to serve, not to entertain.
Nigerians deserve better. This country is on the brink in many areas, and any further erosion of trust in the National Assembly could push the public’s patience to its limits.
If lawmakers continue to act like reality TV stars, then they shouldn’t be surprised when the people treat them like celebrities—loud, dramatic, and ultimately dispensable.
Let common sense prevail. Let national interest override personal pride. Let governance return to the front burner. The Akpabio–Natasha drama has run its course. For the sake of decency, decorum, and democracy—it must end now.
History is watching. So are Nigerians.
