Farewell Tour: Elton John Performs at Glastonbury

Must read

As Elton John performed at Glastonbury for his final United Kingdom performance of his farewell tour, the curtain came down on one of the greatest careers in British music history.

The 76-year-old music icon gave his audience a masterclass in songwriting and performance, with a set list that never failed to deliver timeless pop moments.

Every song was the greatest hit for the entire two hours, including Bennie And The Jets, Tiny Dancer, Your Song, and I’m Still Standing.

He exclaimed to the crowd, “I’m so glad to be here. “I won’t forget this at all.

Pinball Wizard, a song he hadn’t performed in over a decade, was Elton’s first song when he entered the stage shortly after 21:00 BST. The Bitch Is Back, his next song, was a raucous romp.

He took in the huge crowd, which he estimated to number over 120,000 while pausing to catch his breath and extending his arms in thanks.

Because you’ve been standing there for so long, he continued, “I’d better play well and keep you entertained.”.

“Go on, you old sausage,” a supporter yelled from the audience seat next to mine.

With box office receipts of $887 million (£697 million), Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which included the performance, was coming to an end.

There are only seven more dates after Glastonbury, with the final performance on July 8 in Stockholm.

It puts an end to a touring career that has seen Elton grow from a young upstart rocking the Troubador in Los Angeles to a cherished fixture of the rock establishment.

Over the years, he’s developed a reputation for flamboyant excess, including feather boas, platform heels, ornate headdresses, and pianos that catch fire.

I don’t walk around the stage,” he claimed.  I must find some way to draw attention.

However, by Elton’s standards, Glastonbury was a modest performance that concentrated entirely on his love of music.

All evening, he wore the same gold lamé suit, giving off the impression of a man who is happiest when he is playing the piano and letting loose.

I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues and Your Song both featured some exquisite

He struck the I’m Still Standing keys so forcefully that they nearly fell off.

The fact that his voice has changed from what it once was must be acknowledged. The clipped vowels and marmalade diction have a faint Vegas lounge singer scent, but here at Worthy Farm, his singing was strangely effective, cutting through the air with a clarity that other headliners this weekend failed to match.

Special guest rumors had been circulating all weekend before the show.

At Bristol Airport, Britney Spears allegedly appeared.  An armed guard claimed to have seen Dua Lipa.

Harry Styles was expected to be here, but he wasn’t, then he showed up again.

In the end, though, Elton defied convention by supporting a young generation of musicians over pop stars who could easily headline Glastonbury themselves.

While Rina Sawayama, a rising pop star, replaced Kiki Dee on a stirring rendition of Don’t Go Breaking My Heart, he invited Jacob Lusk of the US soul group Gabriels to perform Are You Ready For Love.

Stephen Sanchez from Nashville even had the opportunity to perform his own song, Until I Found You.

I couldn’t believe a 19, 20-year-old could write a song like this, Elton exclaimed after hearing it on the radio last year.

The only exception was Brandon Flowers of The Killers, who performed a handsome duet of Tiny Dancer on stage while dressed in a hot pink suit.

TV cameras captured a proposal in the audience as a result of their performance’s emotional impact.

Overall, there was dissatisfaction due to the absence of star power.

One supporter complained, “Who’s that?” as Sawayama took the stage.

But there was also something admirable about it. Elton remained true to who he was—a rock and pop maniac whose thirst for music has fueled and sustained his career.
