Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio has been elected and sworn in as the 10th Senate President.
Senator Akpabio polled 63 votes to defeat his co-contender, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, who garnered 46 votes.
Senator Akpabio took the oath of allegiance, that of the national assembly, and the oath of the Senate President and pledged to work and perform his duty in accordance with the provisions of the law.

Akpabio, a lawyer, had served as minister for Niger Delta Affairs from 2019 to 2022 and resigned to contest the APC presidential primaries where he later stepped down for President Bola Tinubu.
He served as governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2015, while his rival, Senator Yari was elected Governor of Zamfara State, on 26th April 2011.
