The long wait is finally over! The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), and candidates across Nigeria can now check how they performed. The exams, which ran from April 24 to May 5, attracted close to two million candidates competing for admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
According to JAMB, a total of 1,955,069 candidates sat for this year’s UTME. Out of this number, 39,834 results have been withheld due to various forms of exam malpractice and infractions. These include identity fraud, biometric issues, multiple registrations, and irregular activities in some Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers.
The release of the results comes with a mix of excitement, anxiety, and disappointment. For some, it’s the joy of seeing months of preparation pay off. For others, especially those whose results were withheld, it’s a moment of frustration and uncertainty.
One of the biggest talking points surrounding the 2025 UTME is the overall performance of candidates. Unfortunately, the statistics reveal a worrying trend. Only about 420,415 candidates scored 200 and above out of the maximum 400. This means over 75% of the students scored below the halfway mark. Just 12,414 candidates managed to score 300 and above, and only 4,756 broke past the 320 mark. Meanwhile, 24,535 students scored below 100.
These figures have sparked a national conversation about the state of education in the country. Many are asking hard questions about the quality of secondary education, students’ readiness for higher education, and the support systems available to young Nigerians striving for academic excellence.

JAMB, on its part, continues to take steps to sanitize the examination process. The board confirmed that around 80 individuals are under investigation for exam-related offences. Anambra State reportedly recorded the highest number of suspects, with 14 individuals already identified. JAMB has vowed to remain firm in its fight against exam malpractice to protect the integrity of its exams and ensure that only qualified candidates gain admission.
For candidates who wrote the UTME and are eager to check their results, there are two easy ways to do so. The first is via SMS: simply send “UTMERESULT” to 55019 or 66019 using the same phone number used during registration. Make sure you have at least ₦50 airtime for the message to go through. The second method is online through the official JAMB website, www.jamb.gov.ng. Once there, log in with your registration details and click on the “Check UTME Result” option to view and print your score.
As the dust settles, it’s important for candidates to stay calm and focused. For those who performed well, this is the time to start planning for post-UTME screenings and university admissions. And for those who didn’t do so well, it’s not the end of the road. There are opportunities to re-strategize, take alternative admission paths, or prepare for the next UTME with better guidance and resources.
