As the rainy season intensifies, the Akwa Ibom government is of the view that shared responsibilities by government and individuals on environmental issues will go a long way in curbing some rain-prone disasters.
Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Sir Charles Udo made the assertion while interacting with Government House Press Corps on efforts of the government in combatting flood and other disasters associated with the rainy season.
According to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet in its annual Seasonal Climate Prediction for 2023, the anticipated volume of rainfall is about 3,253 mm in the coastal areas with a high possibility of flash floods in some states, mostly coastal states.
The prediction has served as some compass to governments and agencies across the country to begin to reinforce their bounds and prepare ahead.

Armed with this information, the Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Sir Charles Udo said the Udom-led Government in its proactive style, had since put measures in place to forestall any impending disaster in this area.
Rain Prone Disasters
With the state government conscious of its responsibility, the Environment Commissioner suggested a collaborative approach to achieve tremendous success.

They, however, decried a situation where people dump refuse by the roadside because there are no government-approved receptacles nearby for proper disposal of waste.
They called on relevant government agencies to rise to the challenge of ensuring that receptacles are placed strategically around the metropolis and emptied when due to avoid any incident of the flood.
