On Thursday evening, Peseiro watched Nigeria overcome Sierra Leone 2 1 in the first match of their AFCON qualifying series.

The Super Eagles returned to Abuja’s MKO Abiola Stadium for the first time since a humiliating 1-1 draw with Ghana’s Black Stars in March, which resulted in the three-time African champions missing out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Sierra Leone took the lead through Jonathan Morsay, but Nigeria responded with goals from Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen.

It’s Peseiro’s first triumph after losing in two friendly matches for Mexico and Ecuador.

“We created a lot of scoring chances, we could have won by a wider margin,” Peseiro stated during his post match press conference. “But the team needs more time and we must work.”

“We are superior than Sierra Leone in this game, and we deserve to win,” he added.

We modified the formation in the second half, and I believe our opponent got some excellent opportunities only in the last 10 minutes.”

On Monday, Nigeria will play Sao Tome and Principe in their next AFCON qualifier.
