ASUP Commends Gov Emmanuel, Passes Vote Of Confidence On Rector

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic Ikot Osurua Chapter has commended the state Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel for identifying with projects and innovations in the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic

They thanked the governor for the backing he has given the institution to enable it meet the required educational standard.

The Union equally acknowledged the performance of the Governing Council led by Barr. Ekpenyong Ntekim.

Rising from its Congress held recently, at  secretariat, the Union congratulated the Rector for a successful NBTE Accreditation which saw the Polytechnic securing accreditation and re-accreditation on programmes presented as well as the introduction of new ones.

The ASUP, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic Ikot Osurua Chapter also passed a vote of confidence on the institution’s Rector, Dr Moses Umobong over what the Union described as his efforts at pioneering innovation and revolutionizing academic excellence in the polytechnic.

In a communique signed by the ASUP Chairman, Comrade Eteyen Uko and Secretary, Comrade Aniekan James, the Union also noted with delight that in addition to previously existing programmes, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic can now boast of new programmes such as ND in Mechanical Engineering Technology,  ND in Welding and Fabrication Technology and ND in Library and Information Science.

Others according to the union are, HND in Electrical Electronics with options in Power and Machines, Instrumentation and Control and National Innovative Diploma, NID, in Business and Informatics as well as Para-Legal Studies.

The Union also noted that, since the coming on board of Dr Moses Umobong as Rector on November 28, 2019, he has held the office with dexterity and with administrative acumen which has become both a reference point and benchmark in the country, stating that the Rector has shown capacity not just as a lawyer, scholar and administrator but one with a vision to make Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic a world class center of excellence in technological education and innovation with a mission and vision to produce highly competitive middle-level manpower that can nurture ideas for sustainable development, promote creativity and scientific innovations which will aid national, economic, industrial and technological development.

The communique noted with delight that, Dr Umobong took over office at a time Akwapoly was ranked 99th in the national ranking of Nigerian Polytechnics but in less than three years in office, the Polytechnic has risen to the 18th position and congratulated the Rector for achieving such feat.

The Union said it is proud of the many achievements of the Dr Moses Umobong led Management Team, and listed some of the major achievements to include the purchase of seven official vehicles for use by Principal Officers and Deans of Schools from the Internally Generated Revenue, of the institution, prioritization of Staff welfare, regular local and international Staff training and retraining to enhance capacity and productivity, full Internet coverage to aid research, teaching and learning as well as full digitization and computerization to aid total migration to Computer Based Test and Examination in the institution.

Others it said are, ensuring zero tolerance to cultism and examination malpractice, establishment of a functional medical center and  commended the Rector for enhanced Management/Unions relationship.

The union also noted the construction of new offices, classroom and workshop blocks through effective collaboration with TETFUND, the Akwa Ibom State Government and other development partners which has enhanced staff productivity, enhanced internal security for sustained peace on campus

It called for more synergy and partnership between the Management and the Union and thanked the Rector for his support for the upcoming 2nd International Conference billed for 20th-23rd September this year, with the theme; “Re-Engineering Nations’ Systems For Sustainable Development”.
