Civilian casualties are growing three weeks after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Russian military killed ten people queuing for bread near a grocery store in Chernihiv, according to Ukraine’s prosecutor general.
According to Ukraine’s military forces, Russian soldiers opened fire on a convoy of civilians attempting to evacuate Mariupol, killing some of them, while the exact number is unknown.
Local officials in Mariupol said Russian soldiers destroyed a theatre where hundreds of civilians were taking refuge.
Despite the violence, efforts to reach a truce continue.
After Ukraine’s President Zelensky said late Tuesday that each side’s positions “are already sounding more realistic,” there was some optimism. Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, said there was “hope for compromise” and that some sectors were “near to agreement.”
According to the Financial Times, a peace plan was negotiated in which Russia would depart provided Ukraine proclaimed neutrality and agreed to military limitations.
However, the chances of a quick cease-fire look to be minimal.
The Kremlin said it was too early to provide any terms, while a Ukrainian official said the leaked data were simply a draft that highlighted the Russian side’s starting stance – and that Ukraine had opposing views.
Mr. Putin, according to our World Affairs editor John Simpson, is looking for a means to save face in all of this.
In a televised address, Russian President Vladimir Putin retaliated against Ukraine and the West, declaring that his invasion – or “special military operation,” as Russia puts it – was “going according to plan.”
He screamed against Russians who he claimed were being driven into civil disturbance by the West, asking patriotic Russians to “spit out” those he described as traitors in the population.
