Pakistan has called for more international aid as floods devastate the , forcing people to seek higher and drier ground.

The death toll from monsoon rains has reached 1,033 – with 119 deaths in the past 24 hours, says the National Disaster Management Authority.

The US, UK, UAE and others contributed to a call for the disaster, but more funding is needed, officials say.

A man said that his daughter was swept away by a flooded river.

“She said to me, ‘Dad, I’m going to collect leaves for my goat,'” said Muhammad Fareed, who lives in the Kaghan Valley in the northern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “She went to the edge of the river and a stream of water followed her and carried her away.”

Home Ministry official Salman Sufi said the country urgently needed international support.

“Pakistan is struggling with economic problems but now, just when we were about to overcome them, the monsoon disaster struck,” he said.

Funding for many development projects has been redirected to those affected, he added.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a 10 billion rupee ($45 million) grant for residents of the hardest-hit province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Dawn newspaper reports.

In the northwest of the country, thousands of people fled their homes after the rivers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa overflowed, causing powerful flash floods.

“The house we built with years of hard work has started to collapse before our very eyes,” Junaid Khan, 23 said. “We sat on the side of the road and watched our dream home sink.”

The province of Sindh, in the south-east of the country, has also been hit hard, with thousands of displaced people.
