Four-Story Building Collapses In Uyo, Contractor Runs Away,4 Rescued, Number Of Deaths Unknown

A four-story building under construction on Iman Street in Nse Ntip, near Aka Road, Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom State, has collapsed.

It is discovered that the building, which was intended to be a six-story hotel, collapsed on the fourth floor during construction.

According to an eyewitness, a tricycle driver on Aka Nung Udoe Road Effiong Bassey, the incident happened at about 6.45 pm Nigerian time on Saturday and most of those trapped under the weight of the concrete debris was thought to be workers at the site.

It was feared that many people had been killed.

The uncompleted building collapsed on another house where some occupants were said to be indoors.

Reports say a woman left her four children indoors while she was away to purchase some food items and a young lady went to visit her boyfriend who reports say was not at home but the lady decided to wait for him when the unfortunate incident happened.

Starwitness was unable to verify the report if the people in the building survived.

The Nigerian Red Cross Secretary in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Iniuma Okorodoh, who also confirmed the incident, said about four victims were rescued and taken to the hospital, adding that an excavator was brought to rescue those who are still trapped in the trash.

Similarly, Police Public Relations Officer Odiko Macdon, who also confirmed the incident, said Police Commissioner Olatoye Durosinmi ordered the deployment of officers to protect life and property.
The PPRO, which could not give the exact number of victims, promised to keep the population informed of the evolution of the collapsed building.

Meanwhile, Information and Strategy Commissioner Ini Ememobong, while providing an update on the incident, said on his verified Facebook page that all major rescue and security agencies are on-site with the support of some construction companies.

He said State Government Secretary Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, Special duties Commissioner, Dr. Bassey Okon, and other government officials were there at the scene.
