In a dramatic twist that has taken many by surprise, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and declared his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This move, which comes after weeks of political speculation, marks a significant turning point in Akwa Ibom’s political landscape.
Governor Umo Eno Officially Dumps PDP for APC
Earlier this morning, Governor Eno confirmed that he had submitted his resignation letter to his ward chairman, the PDP state chairman, and the national leadership of the party. According to him, the decision was not taken lightly but was the result of extensive consultations with political stakeholders across the country.
“I have therefore decided to progressively move to the All Progressives Congress,” Governor Eno declared, putting an end to speculation about his political future.
The governor expressed deep appreciation to the PDP for its support throughout his political journey. He acknowledged the role the party played in his emergence as governor and thanked party members and supporters for their trust and loyalty.

However, he emphasized that it was time for a progressive shift. Governor Eno noted that aligning with the federal government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was in the best interest of Akwa Ibom State.
“I admire the leadership style and vision of President Bola Tinubu. To ensure that Akwa Ibom continues to enjoy meaningful development and federal presence, I believe this move is both strategic and necessary,” he explained.
The defection has sparked reactions across the state, with many political observers and analysts weighing in on the potential impact. Some see it as a bold and calculated move to secure federal support for projects and initiatives in Akwa Ibom, while others view it as a betrayal of the PDP’s trust.
Despite the controversy, Governor Eno reassured Akwa Ibomites of his unwavering commitment to the state’s development. He promised that his administration would remain focused on delivering quality governance and ensuring the well-being of the people, regardless of political affiliations.
“My loyalty has always been to the people of Akwa Ibom. Party lines may change, but my vision for the state remains the same — to build a prosperous and united Akwa Ibom,” he stated.
Since assuming office, Governor Eno has been known for his calm but firm leadership style. His decision to join the APC is seen by many as a move that could shift the political balance in the South-South region, traditionally a PDP stronghold.
The APC, on the other hand, has welcomed the governor’s decision with open arms. Party leaders at the national and state levels have expressed their excitement, calling it a testament to the growing influence of the APC under President Tinubu.
“This is a great day for the APC and for Nigeria. Governor Eno’s decision shows that the APC is the party of progress, unity, and development,” one APC chieftain commented.
As political alignments continue to shift across the country, all eyes are now on Akwa Ibom State. With Governor Eno’s defection, the political landscape in the state may witness new dynamics ahead of future elections.
For now, Governor Umo Eno is calling for unity and understanding among all political players and citizens. He urged supporters to focus on the bigger picture — a better and more prosperous Akwa Ibom.
Whether this move will bring the benefits he hopes for remains to be seen. But one thing is certain — Nigerian politics has once again proven to be full of surprises.
