Operations of Drivers’ Welfare Mass Transit Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited has been declared illegal by Akwa Ibom state government
The declaration is contained in a statement by the Commissioner for Transport and Solid Minerals, Chief Uno Etim Uno.
The release says the Drivers’ Welfare Mass Transit Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited chaired by Mr. Jacob Jacob Edem is neither a Limited Liability Company nor one of the recognized motor transport unions in the State.
The ministry in the release names, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, and Nigeria Association of Road Transport Owners, as the only recognized and approved transport Unions in the State.
The ministry also listed four approved and recognized tricycle unions in the State to include, Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria, Keke Owners and Riders Association, KORA; Akwa Ibom Tricycle Association, and Tricycle Owners Foundation Forum.
Akwa Ibom State Motorcycle Transporters Association, according to the ministry is the approved union for motorcycle.
The release made it clear that henceforth, the ministry of Transport and Solid Minerals will not tolerate the activities of illegal Motor Park operators in the State as the State Government has mandated the ministry to ensure that all commuters adhere to the laid down covid-19 protocols.
It stresses that the ministry will not condone what it termed, any rascality and uncomplimentary conduct of any illegal transport business operator.
To this end, the ministry says it has notified the State Commissioner of Police and other security operatives in the State for prompt action and advised members of the public to take note of the new development.
