Philippines military plane has crash landed killing at least 17 while have many survived

When the military transport plane overshot the runway on Jolo island, it was carrying 92 people, mostly troops.

Those who survived were taken to a nearby military hospital. At the crash site, seventeen bodies were discovered.

Above the wreckage of the plane, a Lockheed C130 Hercules, was seen a large ball of black smoke.

The state news agency published images of the scene, which showed burning debris in a wooded area near a number of buildings.

The plane, which crashed near Jolo at 11:30 a.m. local time  was carrying troops from Cagayan de Oro on Mindanao’s southernmost island.

“It missed the runway while attempting to regain power, but it did not

make it,” said armed forces chief Gen Sobejana to reporters.

The plane, which had previously served in the US Air Force, was

handed over to the Philippines in January.

It was the first of two used Hercules delivered by the US as part of a defense cooperation program.

According to the Aviation Safety Network, the aircraft first flew in 1988.
