Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pst Umo Eno made headlines with his announcement of a new minimum wage of ₦80,000 for workers in the state, sparking reactions across Nigeria.
The wage increase is significantly higher than the federal government’s current minimum wage of ₦70,000 and comes at a time when many Nigerian workers are feeling the pressures of inflation and economic hardship.
The decision, which many did not see coming, has left both citizens and political observers surprised. Governor Eno’s administration had previously indicated a commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants, but this substantial wage hike has exceeded expectations.
Umo Eno Shock Critics
The announcement was a major step towards improving the standard of living for the state’s workforce, and it reflects the governor’s vision of bettering the economic conditions of Akwa Ibom’s public sector employees.
Governor Eno explained that the decision was motivated by a desire to alleviate the financial burdens faced by state workers. With rising inflation and the cost of living steadily increasing, particularly after the removal of fuel subsidies in Nigeria, many households have struggled to make ends meet. The wage increase, therefore, is seen as a way to bridge the gap between the state’s economic realities and the needs of its citizens.
He also highlighted that Akwa Ibom is one of Nigeria’s leading oil-producing states, and its wealth should reflect in the welfare of its workers. This bold move aims to set a precedent for other states to follow, particularly those with similar revenue profiles.
For public sector workers in Akwa Ibom, the announcement is a significant relief. The new wage increase will enable them to better support their families, invest in education, healthcare, and possibly boost small-scale economic activities within the state. The wage hike also comes with the promise of more financial independence and a greater quality of life for employees.
Labor unions across Nigeria have praised the move, with many calling for other state governments to follow suit. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has long advocated an increase in the minimum wage to reflect current economic conditions.

Many workers in both public and private sectors across the country are hopeful that this action could spark a broader conversation about wage increments nationwide.
However, there have also been questions regarding the sustainability of this new wage structure. Critics have raised concerns about whether the state’s revenue streams can support such a large payroll over the long term, especially if the increase leads to demands for similar adjustments in other sectors.
While the wage increase is a welcome development, the governor will likely face challenges in balancing the state’s budget, ensuring that the new wages are consistently paid without compromising other areas of governance. Infrastructure development, health, education, and other key sectors will need continued funding, and the government will have to ensure that this salary hike does not lead to deficits or financial mismanagement.
Governor Eno’s decision could serve as a catalyst for national discussions on wage reform, particularly in states with similar economic capabilities. It also puts pressure on the federal government to reconsider the current national minimum wage, which is seen by many as inadequate given the rising cost of living.
IWhile it has been met with shock and some skepticism, it is widely seen as a positive step that could inspire similar reforms across the country. The move has made Governor Eno a figure to watch in Nigerian politics, particularly as discussions about worker welfare and economic stability continue to dominate national conversations.
