The Panther Foundation Die Tageszeitung (taz), closely aligned with the German national daily taz, is offering free training and networking courses on this topic to journalists from Africain 19 countries from June 2023 to January 2024.
The workshop will improve communication between African journalists, their European colleagues, and civil society representatives.
This will strengthen participants’ skills and understanding of the current global debate. It also covers issues that affect the daily work of African journalists, including fake news and disinformation, freedom of expression, digitization of the media, corruption, and the struggle for democratic reforms.
The workshop is divided into two parts.
1.) A series of 7 webinar sessions with civil society experts and lecturers every 4 weeks from June to December 2023. Topics include:
• Existing and new donors in Africa, EU Strategy for Africa (“Global Gateway”)
• Food security after the crisis in Ukraine
• change of weather
• Looted cultural property
• copy
• kind
• fighting corruption
• Fight fake news
• Writing the journal text
• Diary planning
Active participation is essential. All participants are rewarded for their contributions to the articles they write as part of the webinar. At the end of the webinar period, the participants will develop a printed magazine in German and English.
2.) All-inclusive 8-day workshop in Berlin in January 2024. Participants will have the opportunity to meet and exchange views with German actors from NGOs, academics, other media professionals, activists, and government agencies.

Journalists from 19 African countries are invited: Botswana, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Southern Sierra-Leone, Africa, Zambia. Finally, around 16 journalists are selected (usually no more than 1 from each country)!
The language of instruction is English. Fluency is required. Any journalist or freelancer from any industry can apply, including print, television, radio, and online. Journalism experience is required. This seminar is aimed at journalists who have few opportunities to engage in international education.
We especially encourage support from women. More than half of the participants will be women.
