Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of NATO, has announced that he will stay in the position for an additional year.
According to Stoltenberg on Twitter, whose current term as Secretary General of NATO expires on October 1 of this year, “I am honored by the NATO allies’ decision to extend my term as Secretary General until 1 October 2024.”.

According to the alliance, at the summit in Vilnius at the start of next week, the leaders of the member states must ratify the agreement reached on Tuesday to extend Stoltenberg’s term in office.
As the new leader of NATO, Stoltenberg had the annexation of the Ukrainian Crimean peninsula by Russia in his lap when he assumed the position of secretary-general in 2014.
His term was subsequently extended three times, most recently in 2022.
Stoltenberg was named the new governor of the Norwegian central bank in February of last year. Russia attacked Ukraine a short while later.
Stoltenberg accepted an additional year as NATO Secretary General shortly after announcing his resignation from his position.

Stoltenberg has made it clear numerous times that he does not want a second term as secretary general of NATO, but a central NATO source has previously told NTB that a shorter extension might be appropriate.
The decision by Jens Stoltenberg to accept a one-year extension of his term as NATO Secretary General is positive, significant, and reassuring.
