A team of CAF officials has inspected the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, on Sunday in light of its nomination as one of the potential stadia to host the finals of this year’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League and Confederation Cup final matches.
The CAF team from Cairo, Egypt, comprised of Inas Ahmed Fahmy Ahmed and Shenouda Emad Kamel George, as well as the Club Licensing Officer of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mr. Nasiru Jibril, was welcomed by Sir Monday Ebong Uko, the Tour Guide and Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, who was accompanied by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, and management staff members of the state Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Mr. Uko at the event expressed Governor Udom Emmanuel’s gratitude for the choice of Uyo as one of the potential cities for the staging of the continental showpiece’s grand finale and assured the visitors that if the nomination is confirmed, Government will provide the necessary logistics for the staging of a memorable occasion.

Mr. Inas Ahmed, the delegation’s leader, expressed delight with the stadium’s facilities, particularly the quality of natural grass, which he stated rates among the best on the continent, and promised to thoroughly report all he saw on the ground to the CAF hierarchy.
The Ibom Icon Hotel and Golf Resort, as well as the Ibom Multi-Specialty Hospital, were among the peripheral sites visited.
Following the quarter-finals and semi-finals drawings, a draw will be made on April 5 to decide the “home” team for administrative purposes, while the final matches of both the CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup have been planned for the end of May 2022.
