Police in Australia Tasered a 95-year-old woman, causing a public outcry, at a nursing facility.

The woman has since passed away.

Police were called to a report of Clare Nowland wandering the house with a steak knife at around 4:00 on Wednesday, and they arrived to find her in critical condition.

According to NSW Police, she passed away “surrounded by family and loved ones.”.

Assault charges have been brought against the officer who Tasered Mrs. Nowland.

Early in July, the 33-year-old senior constable will appear in court on charges of assault resulting in actual bodily harm, assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, and simple assault.

While investigations are ongoing, he is still off work with pay.

Mrs. Nowland resided in a nursing facility in the town of Cooma, which is located 114 kilometers (71 miles) south of Canberra, the nation’s capital.

According to NSW Police, their thoughts and condolences “remain with those who were fortunate enough to know, love, and be loved by Mrs. Nowland during a life she led hallmarked by family, kindness, and community.

“She was “armed,” according to the police, with a steak knife last week.

The officer used his Taser on her after she started moving toward him “at a slow pace” on Friday, confirming that she needed a walking frame to move.

Mrs. Nowland is thought to have fallen and hit her head during the incident, suffering a fractured skull and a significant brain bleed.

It has sparked demands for both a state parliamentary investigation and the release of the altercation’s bodycam footage.

Mrs. Nowland’s family released a statement in which they described her as the “loving and gentle-natured matriarch of the Nowland family” as well as a “well respected, much loved, and a giving member of her local community.
