It has now become a norm in Akwa Ibom state where permanent secretaries and other top government officials are retained after their retirement for unspecified years. In contrast, other rank and file civil and public servants are not given such consideration.
Also, commissioners have joined the queue and lately local government chairmen have benefitted.
We must understand that there are legal rules for engagement and that there are several potential dangers associated with retaining especially a retired Account General on contract in Akwa Ibom.
Apart from the lack of current expertise, a retired individual may have outdated knowledge and skills, especially in a rapidly evolving field like accounting.
This could lead to errors, inefficiencies, and non-compliance with current accounting regulations and financial reporting requirements.
Top Government Officials
Regrettably, the retired individual may have less motivation to adhere to strict work standards and regulations compared to active professionals.
This could result in a lack of accountability, compromised financial controls, and potential fraud or mismanagement of public funds, have less energy and stamina to maintain a high level of productivity and meet demanding deadlines.
Additionally, these officers may be less open to adopting new technologies or approaches that could streamline processes and improve efficiency.
By retaining a retired Account General, the opportunity to groom and train younger professionals for future leadership roles may be missed.
This could hinder the development of a capable and diverse talent pool for the state.
Depending on the state laws and regulations, there might be legal constraints on employing retired individuals in certain positions or for extended periods.

Violating these laws can result in legal consequences and damage the reputation of the state. To mitigate these risks, it is crucial to establish clear performance expectations, provide adequate training and support, regularly monitor and evaluate the performance of the retired individual, and ensure ongoing compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
Consideration should also be given to succession planning and identifying suitable candidates who can assume the role in the long term.
I want to advice that there are so many account professionals in the state and if a retired top government official retires, he should be allowed to go.
The present state government authority should by now know who should take over the treasury of the state.
A situation where financial decision is allegedly taken outside the shores of Akwa Ibom is unhealthy.
The government of Pastor Umo Eno must be allowed to succeed and the civil servants who help those who want to defraud the state and genuine efforts of the state governor must back off
