NFPL: Setback for Akwa United’s Coach, Players Over League Title, Super Six

In an uphill task this weekend with Gombe United, Akwa United’s current position in the Nigerian Professional Football League, NPFL table is giving the coach of the club, Deji Ayeni, players, football fans, the Club’s Chairman, and the management of the club a sleepless night as the team may not be able to play the super six in other to feature in the CAF league.

Akwa United are in 4th place on the NFPL table with 29 points and a goal difference of nine from 17 matches, which is not enough to take the club to the next level. The last match with Gombe United this weekend is anyone’s game as their opponents may want to fix the match to ensure their non-qualification of the Uyo-based team in the super six. Akwa United archrivals, Remo Stars are on top of Akwa United on the league table with 30 points and are playing at home against Kwara United this weekend.

Akwa United’s performance in this year’s abridged league is not too good since the beginning of the league. The team have won eight matches, lost four, drawn five, and have played seventeen matches.

Anyone would have thought that being fully funded by a government that releases funds on time for sports engagements; the team would have made the best use of the opportunity given them by Governor Udom Emmanuel.

However, it is not late for the team to ensure they make it to the last away march with Gombe United as other teams for this weekend’s encounter may be unlucky. But an early and good start to anything is always very important. Take the case of Bendel Insurance, for instance, The team lost no match but ensured they stay on a steady course.
