In a dramatic political twist, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has officially defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing “Enlightened State Interest” as the main reason behind his move. The announcement, made earlier today, has triggered widespread reactions and growing resistance from key political figures across the state.
Umo Eno’s Defection to APC
Leaders of the Maintain Peace Movement (MPM), the political platform that backed Eno’s rise to power, have openly rejected the governor’s decision. Notable among them are the International Coordinator of MPM, Barr. Emmanuel Enoidem, Commissioner for Information Ini Ememobong, and fifteen members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.
According to insider reports, the resistance stems largely from strong party loyalty to former Governor Udom Emmanuel. Udom remains a firm PDP member and still commands significant influence over the political direction of the state. It is believed that more than 60% of members in Governor Eno’s cabinet and House of Assembly are loyal to Udom, making Eno’s defection highly contentious.

Barr. Emmanuel Enoidem, a former PDP National Legal Adviser, was vocal in his disapproval. He said his decision not to follow Governor Eno was rooted in political values and discipline, not personal interest. Enoidem insisted that political parties should stand as ideological homes and not just platforms for political survival.
“They are harassing many people, and the APC is using intimidation to pressure people into joining ahead of 2027,” Enoidem said. “I will support Umo Eno because he has a covenant with the people, but I won’t join APC. Everybody who goes there fails. It’s like failure is in their DNA.”
Despite his disapproval of the defection, Enoidem acknowledged the governor’s achievements and vowed to continue supporting his administration as long as it stays on the path of development. He described Eno as one of Nigeria’s most impactful governors in the present dispensation.
Governor Umo Eno, on his part, defended his action as a necessary sacrifice for the greater good of Akwa Ibom. He stressed that aligning the state with the ruling party at the federal level is a strategic step to attract increased federal presence and projects to the state.
“Why am I in the APC? It’s simple—Enlightened State Interest,” the governor explained. “This decision is about attracting more federal presence to Akwa Ibom. I have exercised my constitutional right to associate freely, and this is a progressive move for the state.”
The governor also confirmed that he had officially submitted his resignation from the PDP to his ward chairman and had duly informed the PDP leadership at both state and national levels. He was, however, quick to point out that his core values and commitment to good governance would remain unchanged.
Governor Eno added, “Though I have, by today’s event, changed my political affiliation from the PDP to the APC, my values, moral fibre, and foundational principles remain sacrosanct. I will continue to deliver on the mandate entrusted to me by the people.”
Political analysts are watching closely as the situation unfolds. Many have described the development as a potential game-changer that could reshape Akwa Ibom’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections. However, others warn that the move might deepen divisions within the ruling class in the state.
It remains to be seen how many political appointees and stakeholders will follow the governor to his new party. As things stand, tension is rising, and many PDP loyalists have vowed to remain with the party regardless of pressure or political rewards.
With condemnation trailing the defection from several quarters, Akwa Ibom enters a new chapter of political realignment. The state now stands at a crossroads, and the days ahead may determine not just the future of Governor Eno’s administration, but also the fate of PDP and APC in the state.
