The post-match analysis by USM Alger’s coach, Juan Garrido, attributed his team’s failure to beat Rivers United in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup to a combination of factors, including the challenges of fasting during Ramadan and the high temperature conditions of the match.
Despite Garrido’s acknowledgement of the adverse circumstances, Rivers United secured a 1-0 victory over USM Alger, thanks to Augustine Okejepha’s decisive goal in the 9th minute.

This victory at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium keeps Rivers United’s hopes alive as they aim to make history as the first Nigerian team to triumph in an African club competition since Enyimba’s victory in the CAF Super Cup almost two decades ago.
Although Rivers United has displayed dominance at home, with a perfect record in this competition, their away performances have been inconsistent, with one win, one draw, and two losses.
The narrow lead gained in the first leg gives Rivers United an advantageous position heading into the second leg in Algeria, while also presenting a formidable challenge for the reigning champions, USM Alger.

The outcome of the second leg will determine which team progresses to face the winner of the North African clash between Abu Salim of Libya and Renaissance Berkane of Morocco.
In light of their aspirations to advance beyond the quarter-final stage this year, both Rivers United’s coach, Stanley Eguma, and captain, Nyima Nwagua, have expressed confidence in their team’s abilities.
However, Eguma remains cautious of the strategic prowess of North African teams and the necessity for his team to maintain focus and determination in order to secure a place in the next round.
