As part of measures to ensure coconut cultivation to feed the Saint Gabriel’s Coconut Refinery in Mkpat Enin, the Akwa Ibom State Government has distributed coconut seedlings to public schools in Eket Senatorial District.

The exercise which took place at Onna Peoples High School, Abat was performed by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Offiong Offor.

Distributing the coconut seedlings to Secondary Schools in Eket Senatorial District, Dr. Offor said it was the passion of Governor Emmanuel to ensure that everyone plants coconut in the State so as to feed the coconut refinery which requires thousands a day to produce coconut oil.

Dr. Offor who noted that her predecessor, Dr. Glory Edet had earlier distributed coconut to schools across the State, charged the benefiting schools to take good care of the seedlings.

The Commissioner said the distribution will go round all the Public Secondary Schools in the three Senatorial Districts of the State and charged the teachers and students to be involved in agriculture to promote food sufficiency in Akwa Ibom.

Also speaking, the Director, Animal Husbandry, Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Aniefiok Isong advised the Schools to protect the seedlings.

Some of the school Principals which included Mr. Daniel Obong and Bridget Bassey appreciated the State Government for the gesture and promised to take care of the seedlings.
