Akwa United FC, a club in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), have recruited foreign players to strengthen their squad for the 2024-2025 season.
This move aims to enhance the team’s performance in the upcoming campaign by adding international experience and skills to their roster.
Akwa United FC Recruit Foreign Players
The strategy reflects a growing trend among Nigerian clubs to attract foreign talent to compete at higher levels both domestically and in continental tournaments.
The club said in a statement that it recruited two goalkeepers, six defenders, five midfielders and four strikers within and outside the country naming Ghanaian goalkeeper, Seidu Mutawakilu, who joins Akwa United from Rivers United and former Heartland FC goalkeeper, Darlingtin Ovunda.
Others are Mare Abson, signed from Societe ASPAC Benin Republic, Ghanian forward, Paul Acquah from Al Anwar, Libya, Chijioke Alaekwe from Tayaran FC, Libya and Reuben Bala from Coton Sport FC.
It named its defenders to include the U-17 and U-20 utility player, Charles Etim, from Blessed Stars Football Club, Ubong Williams, from Katsina United, Samuel Mathew, from Doma United, Chiamaka Madu, from Rivers United, Ebedebiri Endurance, Rivers United and Eric Oguocha, from Plateau United.

Also joining the Promise Keepers are Kunle Oyetosho, from De-Carddendal FC, Ferinyaro Abdullahi, from Gateway FC, Stephen Wisdom from Bendel Insurance, Agu Samuel from Giant Brillars FC and Olakunle Akala from Nasarawa United.
Head Coach Muhammed Ganaru has expressed confidence in the new players, describing them as “core professionals with the necessary skills and quality” to achieve success in the upcoming season.
Akwa United will kick off their 2024-2025 NPFL campaign against Lobi Stars at the Lafia City Stadium on Saturday, September 7, 2024 but reports say the match has been put forward to September 9 due to the AFCON qualifier between Nigeria and Benin Republic
