The Emmys To Hold In Los Angeles

Must read

Television’s most prestigious awards, the Emmys, will be presented in Los Angeles on Monday night.

There has been some groundwork for the event, with several per-screening festivities being canceled following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last week.

The British Academy of Film and Television has canceled the traditional Hollywood tea party for nominees, while the Canadian Consulate has postponed the celebration.

The ceremony itself must reflect the queen’s death. Hosted by Saturday Night Live comedian Kenan Thompson, these will be the first full-scale Emmys since the pandemic. Last year’s ceremony was held outdoors and has a limited attendance. Royal drama The Crown, last year’s big winner, is not in competition for the 2022 award.

Filming of the latest series has been halted “as a sign of respect” for Female king, Netflix said last week. Succession is the favorite to replace it in the hotly contested Best Drama category. Created by British writer Jesse Armstrong, the series – the Machiavellian tale of a family vying for control of a media empire – has more nominations than any other show, with a total of 25 nominations. It’s against the teen drama Euphoria; The Ozark drug cartel series; The Breaking Bad Better Call Saul spin-off; return to the sci-fi TV series Stranger Things; Korean horror movie Squid Game; the coming-of-age psychological series Yellowjackets and the enigmatic sci-fi The Urgency.

If it wins the trophy, Squid Game – in which bad guys and criminals vie for money in savage and murderous versions of the schoolyard game – will be the first foreign-language film to win the award for best TV series.

Succession is particularly well represented in the dramatic genres. Scottish actor Brian Cox, who plays media mogul Logan Roy, will compete for best actor with his on-screen son, played by Jeremy Strong.

There are also nominations for Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook as well as British actors Matthew Macfadyen and Dame Harriet Walter, who play Caroline, Logan Roy’s ex-wife. Dame Harriet was also nominated for her role as Deborah in the Anglo-American football series Ted Lasso, which is the most nominated comedy.

Other comedies in the works include the fictional Abbott Elementary School, Hacks, Only Killers in the Building, and the long-running show Curb Your E Passion, which never won. Hacks star Jean Smart is hoping to win Best Actress for the second year in a row for her portrayal of Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance.
